Daily Exercises Are Good For You but How So?
Welcome to the New Year! As we get into the new year, I’m sure a lot of us have new or old resolutions that we want to keep ourselves accountable to. Some of you might still be thinking about continuing that resolution about getting in more exercise. So, that brings me to my question, how can daily exercise benefit your health?
Daily exercising can help enhance your mental well-being and promote healthy musculoskeletal function throughout life. The lack of daily exercise can lead to chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease to name a few. About 48% of all American adults currently get 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per day on at least 5 days per week. “Physically active individuals have lower blood pressure, higher insulin sensitivity, and a more favorable plasma lipoprotein profile.”
Exercising can help increase cardiac output and blood pressure, but prolonged exercising helps with lower resting heart rates and cardiac hypertrophy. “Cardiac and vascular changes have been linked to a variety of changes in tissue metabolism and signaling, although our understanding of the contribution to the underlying mechanisms remains incomplete.”
It can be hard to spare 30 minutes of your time daily, so you should look at your everyday activities as an opportunity to be active. For example, if you live close enough to your work, you can opt to bike or walk there instead of driving. If you commute to work through public transportation, you can try getting off at a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way. This can apply to any errands you may have to run throughout the day.
Being active helps delay or prevent chronic disease and diseases associated with aging, and it helps us as adults maintain our quality of life and independence longer as we age. Keeping up with your daily exercise can have a positive impact on your life in the long run. Taking the first step can always be hard, but the earlier you start, the earlier you will benefit from being healthy.
