As the year goes on, we might notice that we start to become lazy or have one too many cheat days. That may leave us feeling frustrated. So, how can you better achieve that new year resolution goal?
It’s almost the new year and you know what that means? New year resolutions! A lot of us might start off the year with a long list of resolutions that we want to accomplish. As the year goes on, we might notice that we start to become lazy or have one too many cheat days. That may leave us feeling frustrated. So, how can you better achieve that new year resolution goal? I have some advice to share with you today on how to embrace healthy habits.
Healthy habits can sometimes turn into unhealthy habits and drain you of energy if you are feeling too restricted and have unrealistic expectations. Here are 5 simple ways to stick to a healthy lifestyle.
- Start with realistic expectations
Setting up a new year resolution that is actually achievable can keep you from feeling discouraged. For example, if you do not typically go for walks and you want that to be your resolution, start off with 15 minute daily walks and then slowly add minutes to that as the year passes.
2. Think about what really motivates you
Making a list of specific reasons why you want to get healthier can be helpful. This can be for health reasons or if you are doing a healthy competition with your friends.
3. Don’t have an “all or nothing” approach
Rejecting the urge to judge your day as good or bad can prevent you from overeating and making poor choices. Like when you are having a bad day and you agree that you deserve a donut hole but have self-control and not eat more than 1 donut hole.
4. Track and monitor your progress
You can log your habits into a dairy, online food tracker, or app to help you stick to a routine and build habits that will last. Our app, Lively Habits, can help you track and learn more about improving your lifestyle.
5. Realize that it takes time to change your habits
Do your best to stay motivated and focused while you adapt to a healthy lifestyle. On average, it takes 66 days to make a new habit. Don’t kick yourself if you are unable to keep up with the new habit in the first week.
New year resolutions are easier to make than to accomplish, so don’t stress! If you follow this list of advice, you can start efficiently making new year resolutions that can help you better your lifestyle. When taking steps towards building healthy habits in your own life, be patient with yourself and check in often about how you feel.
